BioLures

Fishing, a recreational sport enjoyed by all ages, now faces challenges like overfishing, bycatch, and the topic of our concern, soft plastic pollution from fishing lures.

Annually, over 3 million pounds of soft plastic lures enter waterways, taking over 100 years to decompose and releasing harmful toxins like phthalates and bisphenol. This pollution affects humans through the ingestion of microplastics from fish which we eat.

Research by Unity College linked SPLs found in brook trout to significant weight loss.

Also, traditional SPLs rely on fossil fuels like petroleum, contributing to greenhouse gases. Our solution to this problem is BioLures. We wanted to create a fishing lure that was 100% biodegradable BUT was up to par with typical SPLs in terms of performance, strength and durability. Our innovation (BioLures) is the first bioplastic fishing lure that is 100% biodegradable in both fresh and saltwater within several months without discharging harmful chemical by-products. BioLures also reduces the amount of plastic waste discarded into our waterways which helps to protect marine species and their ecosystems. BioLure is created out of a simple mixture of gelatine, glycerin, calcium carbonate, and water, and dipped in wine tannins at the end to provide a natural coating against absorption. This creates an effective lure that is equal to traditional SPL’s in all aspects. Biolures was designed and created by myself (Colin Das) and was a finalist for the Diamond Challenge for innovation in both 2023 and 2025. BioLure has also been submitted to the Conrad challenge and we are thrilled to use Friends of Fish CA as a platform to promote this product. They are expected to be coming soon on LandonsLures.com which is a partner of Friends of Fish CA, donating 10 % of all profits back here!
